The Harbour

Hello,

I wrote this piece at school for some coursework, about a day in spent in a harbour incorporating certain English language rules, metaphors and similies.

The fisherman return from another night of cold, hard labour, tired like the very harbour into which they arrive. Their weary bodies cold as their catch laying bleary eyed in the refrigerated compartment in the boat. Small waves break on the weathered harbour wall, similar to the rhythmic chug of the old fishing boat. The sun just managing to creep up over the horizon from the deep slumber that was night. Upon their arrival on the beach, within only a few minutes the fishermen have counted and sorted the fish and washed down their boats of the diesel spills, oil and fish remains.

Only a few hours pass before the sun starts to blossom in the sky like a flower in bloom, the rays of light fanning out like the petals. The early-morning light reflecting off the glistening ocean. Builders have already been busy for a couple of hours, sweating under the relentless African sun. The sound of the bricks being slapped onto fresh cement at odds with the melodic sound of the waves as they arrive and recede on the beach.
Like every other day, from mid-morning this popular piece of real estate gets lost under the mob of food sellers, tourists and the few locals that venture out after the fishermen have sold their earlier catch. The fisherman’s fresh catch mostly now sold and beautifully prepared, adorns the plates within many of the restaurants along the most popular stretch of boulevard.

The fishermen who sold their catch for just a few Rands only hours ago, have now retired to their modest backstreet homes. The same fish now selling for hundreds in the most lavish hotels. The old, inexpensive fishermen homes worn down by the great many that have walked in each others footsteps.
A distinctive new aroma emerges from the bustling harbour. The smell of oil and fish from the fishing boats which are now being prepared for their early start the next day, drifts along the beach. As the morning matures into afternoon, the sound of people’s chatter, cars and boats making their way up and down the coastline adds to the commotion.

Now the hottest part of the day, people retreat to the cool of the white stone sea-side villas. or the local swimming pools. Only those who are sunbathing or the children who are at their happiest playing on the sand, remain out. Others retire for a brief siesta allowing the sun to fall and cool.  Others splash around in the shallow, warm water of the Indian ocean. The builders carry on regardless, their exposed raw skin resembling leather in the ferocious heat.
As the sun gives way to evening, couples wander through the small town there souls a vigorous fire, the centre of which has now all but emptied and joined the crowds collecting on the seafront.  The tourist shops have long since closed and the informal sellers now setting up outside the same shops. Their baskets of wares and African artifacts overflowing with the beaded jewellery glinting in the last few rays of sunlight. A calm descends the town, like the cloak of cloud over the mountain just a few miles away.
The quietness drifts through the town with only the occasional cry of a child, adult laughter or squawking gull to disturb the evening. The builders have put down their tools, their hardhats placed at the spot where they earlier worked and dissipated through the quiet town to later rendezvous in a bar. There the relentless precision work is forgotten and replaced with something much more entertaining.
By late evening, the blazing red light of the sun sits on the horizon before disappearing behind the mountain. The day turns into night but not before creating a beautiful sunset, by way of fanfare prior to departure. It’s not long before the fishermen trudge their way back to the boats and go in search of their quarry, to supply to the restaurants to feed their gluttonous customers. The lighthouse guides them out into the blackness of the sea and once past Cape Point where the two oceans meet, the water becomes cooler and and the fish can be found.
Thanks for reading and if you’ve got any commemnts, thoughts or suggestions tell us!

The LHC Rap

Hello,

This is probably old news now but I found it pretty cool.
A worker at CERN offered to explain how the LHC works by producing a rapp song about it.  Her name is “Kate McAlpine” (her rapper name “alpinekat”).  Aged 24 she wrote the lyrics whilst on her 40 minute bus commute from Geneva to the CERN site.

Personally I think it’s amazing.  Here it is.

Do You Want To Be A Guest Writer?

Hello everybody,

This is not an informative article, this is a question to the visitors of this site.

Do you want to be a guest writer?  A guest writer is someone who writes articles for publication on someone else’s website, basically have a slice of my blog?  He/she can post one article or many times about a variety of topics.  The reason I’m asking is because I am becoming increasingly busy with more on-line help requests (PC issues) and other stuff - oh yes, and homework now that we are back at school, so I would appreciate the input to make sure my site’s pumping out regular, good quality content.

What are the requirements?

  • The grammar and spelling of the article must be correct so I haven’t got to do that bit (just means switching on your spell check).
  • The article should be of interest to you, whether it’s a comment about the weather, an item in the news or simply a banal desire to get a response… as long as you take an interest in the topic
  • Have Fun.

If you would like to be a guest writer please e-mail me at admin(at)trulyrandom.net.

Thanks, Dan

What People Really Think About Gay Marriage.

Hello,

Gay marriage is a very controversial concept some believe that anyone should be allowed to marry anyone but some people think that the shouldn’t be allowed. This may be that the religion they believe is thinks that only male and females may marry another reason could be is that they just don’t think anyone could marry another partner of the same sex.

So I asked the question: “Do you think that gay marriage should be allowed?”, and this was there response.

How it is: “Absolutely. Everyone should have the right to be miserable with that special someone.”

Angela: “Yes, why not?”

Disturbed: “Yes. Love is good!”

oOdaisyOo: Yes, marriage is the joining of two people in love. It doesn’t matter if they are gay.”

tjluvsjefef24: Haven’t we already answered this like a gazillion times? Yes, it should be allowed.”
LEG: “yes.”
Miguel: “Why not? It’s not like they don’t pay taxes. It’s there country too.”
LaraFarah: “ think it should be allowed - I think it is bad that they are not allowed in a major part of the world because I personally think its like taking away their free will. Gay people are humans too.”
xxpeplyxx: “Yep 100% if someones in love with the same sex why should it matter they should have equal rights!!”
pchsvioloncello: “Come on guys! Everyone knows that marriage is a holy union, blessed by god and intended only for breeders!”
Johnie 13: “Only for gays! But what does the Bible say??”
rockfish: “I guess one sickie deserves another.”
E: “As a person about to have a “gay wedding”, I would say yeah!”
marius b: “By being a Christian, I do not agree with it. But one sin does not out weight another. I can not judge you and no one else can judge you. We all commit sins. I don’t think that family members should dis-own you either. We should love people regardless.of what they do, that does not mean we have to like what they do. Keep your head up and do what makes you happy.”
Jake J: Of course, gay and hetero people pay the same taxes, have the same responsibilities, have the same rights under law, elect the same politicians, are law abiding citizens..the gov should stick to governing and stay out of people’s bedrooms, if a church doesn’t want to perform the wed service then that’s their right to chose, but the gov represents all people..I’m not gay but I don’t know why people act so homophobic when it doesn’t affect their lives in any way, it’s ok for a gang banging, drug dealing gansta thug to get married but not a law abiding gay person..how is that ethical and fair? ..tell me”
OldD: “No, it is an institution of God not man. Man cannot make the rules he is told by God to follow them. Tell me this, how can a preacher or man of the cloth wed two people of the same sex??? They among anyone know that God doesn’t condone it. One man for one woman! Gays may “marry” but their relationship will never come even close to the one that a man and woman share.”
Cassandra: “This country has made alot of mistakes, and illegalizing love is definitely one of them. Gay people should be allowed to get married without people criticizing them. They’re not hurting anyone so I don’t see what the big deal is. Even if it continue’s to stay illegal, they’re still going to date each other, love each other, and have sex. So what are we stopping or trying to avoid by making gay marriage illegal? Just like slavery was based on skin color, now marriage is based on gender? I don’t think it’s right.”
Texicano: “Allowed? How is it going to be prevented? I live in a state that has outlawed gay marriage but it did not stop me from having a long-term monogamous gay relationship that I and my entire family consider a gay marriage. In a free country you are a fool if you think you can legislate how adults should live their lives.”
Puremurder:marriage? I don’t know! Normally this marriage consept is not necessary, right? But maybe if the government allows gay marriage, they I mean, gays can think that the government care about them! Mmy answer is: yes! For their rights, it should be allowed!”

PS. All the text from other people is there own, I haven’t edited it for spelling or grammar mistakes.

So, what do you think on gay marraige? Post it here!

Facts Of Poverty

Hello again,

How many of us really know what poverty is and how many people are affected?  This thought has spurred me on to share the following with you.

Poverty:

“the state of having little or no money and few or no material possessions”.

  1. Half the world — nearly three billion people — live on less than two dollars a day.
  2. The poorest 40% of the world population accounts for 5 percent of global income, the richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of world income.
  3. 26,500-30,000 children die each day due to poverty.
  4. More than 50% of Africans suffer from water-related diseases such as cholera and infant diarrhoea.
  5. More than 2.6 billion people—over 40% of the world’s population—do not have basic sanitation and more than one billion people still use unsafe sources of drinking water.
  6. Every 3.6 seconds another person dies of starvation and the large majority are children under the age of 5.
  7. Less than 2% of what the world spends each year on weapons is needed to put every child into basic education and yet it doesn’t happen.
  8. Every year six million children die from malnutrition before their fifth birthday.
  9. More than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day…300 million are children.
  10. 51 percent of the world’s 100 hundred wealthiest bodies are corporations.

Top 8 ways to speed up your computer - Speed and Secure part 1

Hello,

When you first purchase a computer, even after the first few programs are installed it remains blazingly fast!  However after a few years of use your computer operation will slow down - imagine a partial blockage in a hosepipe that cannot be seen.  It’s such a gradual process that you hardly notice, but the more you use that hosepipe the more blocked it will get.  This analogy could be taken further and you might consider the hosepipe’s connection to water which is not clean an added cause for blockage (= pirate programs? / viruses / adware etc) or leaving the hosepipe outside for ages and not being wound up (= no maintenance / housekeeping), but as I don’t do analogies…

So here are the top 8 ways to counteract everything that slows down a computer for FREE!  Applicable to Windows XP or windows Vista, ignore this if you don’t know what it means.

  1. Defragment Your Hard Drive(s)
If you don’t do this your hard disk(s) become fragmented by general use and when you new programmes are installed.  When you install a program the file is generally placed on one part of the computer but after a while bits and pieces of data are spread across the hard disk.  By using Windows ‘Disk Defragmenter’ the software moves all the bits of data into roughly one place. You can get to the file by clicking:

    • Start
    • All Programs
    • Accessories
    • Disk Defragmenter
    • Once the programme has fully loaded click on the top drive and work your way down.
  2. Disk Cleanup
Disk cleanup performs ‘housekeeping’.  When you load most programmes, often bits of data that may have been used while the programme was running are left behind.  Those programs don’t generally bother deleting those, which can slow the computer down. You can easily and safely delete those bits of data by clicking:

    • Start
    • All Programs
    • Accessories
    • Disk Cleanup
    • If it comes up with a list of boxes make sure all are ticked.
  3. Uninstall Unused Software
Uninstalling unused software speeds up the computer by freeing up space on the hard drive, cutting down on all the ‘data sludge’ that it has to wade through for normal use.  To do this click the following:

    • Start
    • control Panel
    • Add or Remove Programs
    • Scroll threw the list and find the programs that you wish to remove
    • Click ‘Add/Remove’ or ‘Remove’
    • If it asks you to confirm removal click ‘Yes’ or ‘Confirm’
  4. Run Windows Update
Windows update is a update service offered by Windows (surprise surprise).  The updates
are generally security related but they can also include patches for added
stability. To run the update simply click:

    • Windows XP
      Start
      Control Panel
      Automatic Updates
Check the circle next to ‘Automatic (recommended)’
    • Windows Vista
      Start
      Control Panel
On the left is ‘Change Settings’
    • Check ‘Automatic (recommended)’
  5. Disable Indexing Services
Windows Indexing Services is a service that categorises all the files and folders on your hard drives.  The problem with this is that it also slows down the computer considerably. To disable it click the following:

    • My Computer
    • Right Click ‘Local Disk (C:)’
    • Click Properties
    • Uncheck ‘Allow Indexing Service’
  6. Stop Unwanted Start-up Programs
When you start up the computer and other programs automatically start that you don’t necessary want at that time.  Another problem is that it also slows the computer down. To remove the programs from start up (this does not remove the programs permanently) click:

    • XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
    • Vista - C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    • (Note - this directory is hidden by default)Delete the programs you don’t want in loading when the computer starts up.

  7. Extra Ram
RAM stands for Random Access Memory and your RAM helps to process all the information that goes through the computer.  Broadly speaking the more RAM you have, the faster your computer.  Unfortunately it does cost but prices are relatively cheap.
I use a website called ‘Crucial’ and they have a nifty little tool to help you sort things out.

  8. Error-Checking
Error Checking can help diagnose and even correct a wide range of hard drive errors.  It helps stability, speed and may even fix a few errors. To do it click:

    • Open ‘My Computer’
    • Right click on one of the Hard Drives (usually C:)
    • Click ‘Properties’
    • Click the ‘Tools’ Tab
    • Click ‘Check Now’
    • Click both the boxes
    • Click Start
    • Restart thee computer if asked.

Notes:

  • You may want to bookmark this page for future reference,
    • Firefox: press Ctrl-d to bookmark or ‘Bookmark this page’ in ‘Bookmarks’.
    • Internet Explorer: Press Ctrl-D or ‘Add to Favourites’ in ‘Favourites’.
    • If you liked this article share it, click the ‘Share This’ button below!
  • Before we continue it is highly recommended that you back up your computer.
  • I cannot be held responsible for any problems that may be incurred while carrying out these suggested actions, however I may offer remote diagnostic assistance to help fix any existing computer problems.

I recommend you do this twice in a row and then repeat once a month.  Hopefully after that your computer should be blazingly fast.  If not, or if you want more speed try the links below.  Also I don’t recommend that you use any software apart from the software that comes with Windows.

Do you have a tip that speeds up your computer or do you just want to give us a comment, try the guest box below! :)
